Ponyboy felt that he needed to prove to both gangs that he was tough and "tuff". He knew that all the greasers knew what happened to him and knew that he was sick. If he helped win the rumble, he would be considered stronger than he ever was. It was considered a duty for him.
Ponyboy felt guilt to prove himself for the greasers and for Johnny. Also the gang would be mad at him for chickening out of the fight. He also wanted to be considered strong and tuff. This gave him the urge to fight.
Ponyboy needed to take the anger and sadness out on someone for his friend’s death. He also was afraid of what the gang would think of him if he did not participate in the gang fight so he basically needed to come.
