I think that he wanted Ponyboy to continue to attend school and work hard. He did not want Ponyboy to catch the bad habits of the other members of the gang. Johnny wanted Ponyboy to stay strong, even though he lost one of his best friends.

I believe that Johnny means for Ponyboy to stay how he is, and He uses the word gold because gold stands out and Ponyboy stands out in the gang. He goes to school, likes to watch sunsets, and also doesn’t act tough like the rest of the gang.

When Johnny told Ponyboy to “stay gold” he meant that Pony should keep being himself. He wants Pony to stay in school and try his best. He does not want Pony to do the bad habits that his friends do. Johnny cares a lot about Pony and he wants him to push himself to be the best person he can be. Johnny wants Pony to stay priceless, just like gold.

I think Johhny is referring to the poem they were talking about in the church. Also how he should stay on the path he is on and not stray from it. I think Johnny wants Ponyboy to make some thing of his life and not throw it away like he did.
